[Excessive intake of ultra-processed foods may increase health risks] A new study published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, found that excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods such as soft drinks, potato chips and biscuits may be associated with increased risk of stroke and dementia. These foods usually contain high amounts of sugar, fat and salt, while relatively low amounts of protein and fiber. Soft drinks, salty and sugary snacks, ice cream, hamburgers, canned baked beans, ketchup, mayonnaise and packaged breads are all included in this category. In contrast, unprocessed or lightly processed foods, such as simply cut meat and fresh vegetables and fruits, provide healthier options. Although studies have not directly established a causal relationship between food consumption and memory impairment, thinking problems or stroke, some associations have been revealed between individuals who consume ultraprocessed foods and these health problems.
